I have, as it happens, twice filled or nearly filled cathedral sized churches with my work once in Southwark Cathedral and once in Southwell Minster, but these works have come back to me or have been sold elsewhere.’ He continues to exhibit and his work is held in numerous private and public collections both in the UK and overseas, including the British Museum. Labelled a Neo-Romantic, Sutherland belonged to no school but was regarded as a master in his own right. Graham Vivian Sutherland (24 August 1903 17 February 1980) was a prolific English artist. He designed the vast tapestry Christ in Glory installed in Coventry Cathedral in 1962. His many stays in southern France inspired his works in the 1960's. In the 1950's Sutherland found his strength in portrait painting. A convert to Roman Catholicism, he painted his first religious scenes in the late 1940s – images of Christ’s passion informed by and commenting on the horrors of the Holocaust. Graham Sutherlands fascination with landscapes evolved over his career, from his idyllic early prints to the Surrealist paintings for which he became known. During World War II he was named an official war artist for Britain, an experience which shaped the remainder of his career. He turned to painting in the 1930s and quickly gained an international reputation. Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) studied engraving at Goldsmiths College in London from 1920 until 1925.
